Domestic Violence
There are conflicting views about whether the level of domestic violence is on the increase or whether it is just more widely reported. Whatever the answer, the reality is that it happens and will continue to happen until action is taken to stop it.
The good news is that the law recognises its existence, and there are legal measures that can be taken quickly to provide domestic violence victims with immediate support and safety.
‘We can act immediately and decisively,’ says William Edwards, head of the family law team at Thatcher & Hallam LLP. ‘The priority of the courts is the safety of the victim and in particular the children of the household. Within a matter of only hours we are usually able to obtain the required order affording protection.’
Following the successful granting of an injunction, the family law team then concentrates on assisting their clients through the next difficult stage of their lives, including housing and financial support. ‘It is not uncommon for our clients to feel incredibly lonely and vulnerable during this time. We therefore make it a priority to ensure that they have all the support and care that is available,’ adds William,
