There are now over one million Britons owning property abroad and the numbers continue to increase. Britain’s membership of the European Union together with increased and improved information technology and communications has facilitated a significant opening for businesses to engage in international trade within a global market and for individuals to buy property in places where they live, work or visit overseas. Notaries Public are the specialist lawyers who are very often called upon to act in legal transactions involving overseas jurisdictions. They possess a specialist qualification quite separate from their standard solicitors’ qualification which enables them to bear this distinct accreditation. Very often the work is involved with the buying or selling of overseas property or the management of an overseas estate of someone who has died. Increasingly, the services of a Notary Public are necessary in international commercial transactions.
