Unmarried and Same Sex Couples
Surveys reveal that more than half of first-time house buyers are unmarried. Many remain unmarried after having children together. There is then the presumption that the legal rights and obligations of the unmarried couple are the same as a married couple. Similarly, there are many same sex couples who live together outside of a civil partnership. Unfortunately, the law is different and sometimes complex, which can lead to much anguish, misunderstanding and grief when a relationship breaks down.
The family law team at Thatcher & Hallam have extensive knowledge and experience in this area. They will offer you clear and constructive advice on the steps that should be taken to protect the legal interests of all parties particularly where children and rights in the home are concerned. As the law in these situations does not always immediately recognise who has what rights in these situations, they will also crucially explain what you should do to protect your rights in the event of death.
